In my art practice I draw, paint and create sounds. In painting I am exploring the variety of textures and marks I can make with the materials I have. Most of the materials and surfaces I use are found or re-used. Knowing it is impossible to make a wholly unique art object, I am always deriving. I derive from my influences across art practices and try to synthesize them with my current situation.
Expressing myself through paint is very personally important. A lot of the meaning and how a piece ends up looking is heavily indebted to the process, of course. This allows me greater freedom in changing direction or obliterating previous work. As a painter and more broadly as an artist, my work is heavily guided by my politics, philosophy, my process, and my current situation.
My sound work has been dealing with ideas of memory, lucidity and time. Using old reels of tape which contain voice recordings, group meetings, and music. Reusing and manipulating these sounds brings back the dead, placing them in a new context. I also derive from field recordings I make, capturing different situations to then re-present them in a new constructed situation.
I am always searching for new and better ways to express myself, always deriving from influences and refining my own work.
